What is an EC2 vCPU quota?

AWS limits the number of vCPUs you can run simultaneously per account per region. Default new accounts get 32–64 vCPU for on-demand instances. Increasing this requires requesting a quota raise via AWS Support, which can take days or weeks to approve.

How many EC2 instances can I run with a 32 vCPU account?

With 32 vCPUs: 1x c5.8xlarge (32 vCPU), 4x c5.2xlarge (8 vCPU each), 16x c5.large (2 vCPU each), or 32x t3.micro (1 vCPU each). The number of instances depends entirely on the instance type you choose.

Do high vCPU accounts have credit cards attached?

No. The accounts have pre-approved quota limits but no pre-attached payment method. You add your own payment method or use credits to pay for the instances you launch.

What instance types benefit most from high vCPU accounts?

Compute-optimized (c5, c6g), memory-optimized (r5, r6g), GPU (p3, p4), and High Performance Computing (hpc6a) instances benefit most. These high-core-count instance types are impossible to run without elevated vCPU quotas.

Can I use high vCPU accounts for AWS Batch or ECS?

Yes. AWS Batch, ECS, and EKS all use the underlying EC2 vCPU quota. A 256 vCPU account allows you to run a Batch cluster with 256 vCPUs of compute simultaneously, distributed across any EC2 instance types.
